Ukrainian boxing stars Vasyl Lomachenko, Oleksandr Usyk and the Klitschko brothers have joined the Ukrainian forces to fight off the Russian invasion. Lomachenko – arguably the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet – is the latest fighter to join Territorial Defense forces in his home country.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last week has prompted the four most famous fighters from the country to declare their willingness to take up arms. First, prior to the invasion, former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko enlisted in the country’s reserve army.
Then, once the invasion began, his brother and former champion Vitali Klitschko (now Mayor of Kiev) confirmed he will join the fight.
On Sunday, Oleksandr Usyk joined forces in Kiev and now Vasyl Lomachenko has done the same by joining the Belgorod-Dnestrovsky Territorial Defense.
Lomachenko, who is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, was seen carrying an M16 while dressed in fatigues near his hometown over the weekend.
Former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko commented on Monday:
“I am Ukrainian, and I am a fighter.
Our strongest force is the will and desire to live in a free country, and we have chosen the direction we want to go.”

In this senseless war that is not going to have any winners, but only losers, these four boxers rank among the best fighters in the world. However, the quartet have no combat experience and could suffer severe injuries and even death against the bigger, better-armed, and experienced Russian army.
Every war has an end. Let’s hope that this one ends as quickly and as painlessly as possible.
