‘Prikspijt’, which roughly translates to ‘jab regret’, has been named Word of the Year 2021 by the famous Dutch dictionary ‘Van Dale’. The word received 82.2% of the 49,000 votes cast on the Van Dale website.

‘Prikspijt‘ was selected from among 15 words with the two closest contenders ‘woonprotest‘, a word referring to protests about the Dutch housing market, and ‘wappiegeluid‘, a derogatory word that refers to conspiracy theorists, receiving just 3.7% and 3.6% of the vote.
Dutch Health Minister Hugo de Jonge, expressed frustration about the result saying on Twitter:
“If you are in the ICU because you have not gotten a shot, only then do you have jab regret.”

Garnering a staggering 45,000 out of a possible 49,000 votes, the result has been labeled ‘a sign of the polarising times‘ by Van Dale’s Editor-in-Chief Ton Den Boom.
Claims have been made that the outcome was a result of bots or Twitter pressure, but Den Boom has ruled out this possibility and has rejected calls for re-election.
The result may come as a surprise to some, however, it shows that the Dutch are part of the growing groundswell of folks worldwide that are sick and tired of the mindless compliance with science messaging that is shoved down their throat daily by the people who are supposed to represent them.
