Guatemalan football player Marcos Menaldo has died after suffering a heart attack during a training session on Monday.

The 25-year-old defender of Deportivo Marquense had complained of breathing difficulties before the fatal incident.

Menaldo collapsed while training with his team at the Marquesa de la Ensenada Stadium and received emergency CPR treatment on the pitch. The 25-year-old was then transferred to a nearby private hospital where he was declared dead shortly after.

Club president Hernan Maldonado addressed the heartbreaking death of his player, telling ESPN digital:

“It was around 11:00 am that they called me to inform me that Marcos had fainted in training.

They transferred him to hospital where they did everything possible. But unfortunately, his death was confirmed.

[He was] a young, dynamic and jovial person. I don’t know why this happened to him. It is shocking because you lose not only a player, but you also lose a friend.”

Menaldo was instrumental in helping Deportivo win Guatemala’s second division title last season, which coincidentally occurred on the day he turned 25.

His sudden death on Monday has left Deportivo fans utterly shocked as he had turned into a fan favorite due to his passion and efforts for the club.
