Gas prices spiked to all-time highs on Tuesday as Joe Biden announced that his administration is banning Russian oil, natural gas and coal imports to the US in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Biden said in remarks from the White House:

“Today I am announcing the United States is targeting the main artery of Russia’s economy. We’re banning all imports of Russian oil and gas and energy.

That means Russian oil will no longer be acceptable at US ports and the American people will deal another powerful blow to Putin’s war machine.”

President Joe Biden announced a full ban on energy imports from Russia

Gas prices were already high before the war in Ukraine and were causing political problems for President Biden and the White House. Inflation has impacted almost every sector of American life.

It appears that Biden will continue to experience souring public opinions from the historically high gas prices. Ivan Zapien, a lobbyist and former Democratic National Committee official commented:

“The short answer is that the higher gas prices go and the longer they continue to be such, that will hurt the president and Democrats over time.”

The White House has said that it will do everything possible to mitigate pain for U.S. consumers. However, Biden has repeatedly acknowledged that there will be costs for the U.S. economy and American households due to the war in Ukraine.

It remains to be seen just how much patience American consumers will show for higher prices at the pump.
