MUNICH, GERMANY – Football Club Bayern Munich has announced that players who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 will be subject to pay cuts, reports BILD. This affects Joshua Kimmich, who has come into the public eye in recent weeks, as well as Serge Gnabry, Jamal Musiala, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Michael Cuisance. The players have been banned from staying in the same hotel as their teammates ahead of matches and must travel to games separately, according to Kicker.

Fed up with players missing time, Bayern has decided to no longer pay the salaries of unvaccinated players while they’re quarantined. The city of Munich had legislated on November 1st that employers do not have pay staff forced to quarantine if they are unvaccinated.

Recently, Bayern team member Niklas Süle tested positive, forcing Kimmich, Gnabry, Musiala and Choupo-Moting to go into quarantine for two weeks.

This is a significant financial penalty for players like Kimmich, who would stand to lose up to 384,000 euros per week out of his 20 million a year salary.

Serge Gnabry

Bayern is ruling nothing out, including isolating the unvaccinated players from the rest of the team during training. Although the five were surprised at this announcement, it has met with approval from the rest of the team.

The news comes after the resignation of Werder Bremen head coach Markus Anfang after he was accused of having forged his vaccination papers, with investigations continuing.
