In the latest example of a worrying trend of heart injuries among sportsmen, another professional footballer has been ruled out due to a heart problem. Southend United midfielder Abu Ogogo has been diagnosed with inflammation around the heart muscle, reports the BBC.

The 32-year-old requires a ‘period of rest’ and will therefore be out of action for at least a month.

Abu Ogogo, 32, has been diagnosed with inflammation around the heart muscle

Ogogo reported chest problems last week and was admitted to hospital where he was eventually diagnosed with pericarditis.

Southend United head coach Kevin Maher said about the midfielder’s situation:

“Abs [Abu Ogogo] initially had a dead leg and he got another knock on that but since then he’s reported a few problems with his chest. He went for a check-up at hospital last week and he’s out for a period now, probably about a month or so.

He needs rest and medication as there’s inflammation around the heart muscle.”

A dead leg could also be the result of a widely reported adverse reaction from the vaccine where a blood clot impairs blood flow to a major limb.

The 32-year-old joins a growing group of professional football players who have recently suffered heart problems.

This last week alone has seen FC Barcelona striker Sergio Agüero announce his retirement from football due to a heart condition. Manchester United player Victor Lindelof is fitted with a heart monitor after suffering chest pains during a game on Saturday. French Ligue 1 player Martin Terrier was substituted on Sunday after experiencing breathing problems and Napoli midfielder Piotr Zielinski asked to come off during a match on Sunday after suffering chest pains.

The sudden rise in footballers suffering heart and breathing problems is raising eyebrows around the world. However, cardiologists insist the recent incidents are “purely coincidental”.
